Xiphactinus was a genus of large predatory fish that lived in North America's interior seaways during the Late Cretaceous.

Characteristics[]

Xiphactinus could grow to around 6 meters long. It had a streamlined body, and large fangs.

The living creature[]

Xiphactinus was a hyper carnivore. One famous specimen of a 4-meter individual contained the remains of a Gallicus that was nearly 2-meters long itself. While the ingestion of the Gallicus likely killed the Xiphactinus as well, it is a testament to the aggression and ferocity of this fish.

Importance[]

Xiphactinus is famous for its ferocious appearance. It has been featured multiple times in television, including the Walking With Dinosaurs special Sea Monsters and the Animal Planet series River Monsters.
